Looking through history we see extraordinary leaps and jumps within the education system, but whoever thought up of the learning management system to facilitate online learning? The progression from education then to education now is simply nothing less than an immense accomplishment, yet there seems to be continuous initiatives to develop new ways to further education. Technology is in a constant quest to develop innovative initiatives that ultimately strive to make every day routines efficient, and we see this constant drive even within the learning management system as new types of modules and courses are developed.

Going back to the 1700’s schools were very limited in size and resources with their one room school house that housed numerous age levels within one class. Schools began to develop quickly and as a result the doors of opportunity were opened for students not discriminating against, age, social class, ethnicity, or gender. Students, for the first time, were divided up based on their age and placed in age specific classrooms with their own course material that proved to be age appropriate. Now moving ahead a few centuries to when computers were successfully integrated into schools. It wasn’t long before computers were integrated into the curriculum as a regular subject matter making it mandatory for students to participate in computer classes.

As no surprise technology went above and beyond when it introduced wireless internet. It can now be found on most every college campus, internet cafes or free wifi signs have been popping up at local coffee houses, workplaces offer wireless internet and even some residential living areas. High Schools are turning to the web as they provide a secured system where Students must complete and submit their assignments online and can access their new assignments for their class schedules. Thanks to this new enhancement in the school system, Parents can view and track how their child is doing their classes with the online report card that posts grades of assignments as well as overall course grades. Even Colleges have acknowledged the value to creating a mobile means of information and have implemented that into education as they are creating distant learning programs via learning management system that enable students to earn their degrees online.

Technology never rests as there is a continuous drive to find new ways of making higher education more efficient. An example of this is newly integrated interactive courses that provide virtual instructor led seminars live on the web as well as assessment tools that measure the effectiveness of the course by measuring student’s reactions and scores. With the different learning methods, content developers have implemented each style; visual, auditory, and kinetic, to their curriculum material to ensure the greatest amount of comprehension for their learners. Opportunity has been presented to us with this valuable means of higher education as the learning management system provides an efficient way to distribute necessary curriculum to a mass audience. It has been an amazing journey from where we started to where we sit now in the education system and knowing that this isn’t the end of new and exciting developments.
